Dave Faust ('82)
From 1977-81, Faust was one of the on-court leaders of the men’s basketball team at Thomas More. He served as the point guard for Head Coach Jim Connor and was a team captain as a junior and senior. His trademark was working hard and inspiring others to work hard. He played in 103 career games and scored 1,285 career points, an average of 12.5 points per game. At the time of his induction, he ranked in the top-10 for career assists with 344, an average of 3.3 per game.
Faust’s best season came during the 1979-80 season as a junior when he scored a career-best 505 points in 33 games for an average of 15.3 points per game. He also had a career-best 97 rebounds and 117 assists. He made 211-of-413 field goal attempts and 83-of-119 free throw attempts. The team posted a 14-19 record that year and was 9-7 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). Along with Jim Nestheide, Faust was responsible for running the offense as both were partly responsible for the success of Brian O’Conner who scored 701 points that season as a result of assists from Faust.
An excellent shooter, Faust had a career field goal percentage of 46.3 percent and 75.8 percent from the free throw line. A triple threat, he averaged nearly 13 points per game, over three assists and 2.6 rebounds for his career. As a sophomore during the 1978-79 season, Faust led the team in assists with 110, becoming the first player in school history to total over 100 in a single-season. Also that year, he averaged 13.1 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game.
During his senior season in 1980-81, Faust helped lead the team to the best record in school history, at that time, of 21-13. At the time Faust was inducted, that team is the only in program history to have won at least 20 games in a single-season. That year, Faust averaged 13.4 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game. Jim Connor often said that Faust was the best guard that he ever coached in all of his years as a coach.
Off the court, Faust was also a leader as he would volunteer his time along with other teammates, working bingo on Friday nights. Faust had the opportunity to coach the team at Transylvania after Coach Connor and his assistant coach were hurt in a bus accident. He proceeded to lead the team to victory at Transylvania, capturing the tournament championship. Faust also coached the junior varsity program while completing his degree at Thomas More and was a member of the baseball team.
At the time of induction, he was the highly respected head coach at St. Henry High School where he has been for 15 years. His teams have captured the 9th Region All-A Tournament four times, advancing to the All-A State Championship once. Faust was named 9th Region Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.
In addition to coaching at St. Henry he was involved with St. Henry/St. Paul activities. Faust has made a significant positive impact in the community and still remains loyal to his alma mater. As a coach, Faust has sent four players to Thomas More and speaks very highly of the college and is always recruiting his students to attend Thomas More. He has been described by one as an example of what Thomas More stands for.
