Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – Junior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) set the Thomas More College baseball career saves record today (Tuesday, April 19, 2016) in the Saints' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader split with Saint Vincent College at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Saint Vincent won game one, 16-, but the Saints won the nightcap, 3-2.
With the split, the Saints are now 20-7 overall and 14-2 in the PAC and the Bearcats are 16-14 overall and 9-8 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Saint Vincent scored in five of the first inning to tally 16 runs and Thomas More got its two runs off a two-run homer by sophomore second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills).
Sophomore pitcher Austin Koch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) suffered the loss as he pitched three and two-third innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out one.
In the night cap, Saint Vincent scored a run off a homer in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, junior right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) hit a two-run home run to right center fielder scoring Laumann for a 2-1 lead. Saint Vincent tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when it plated a run. In the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a run batted-in single to right field scoring freshman pinch runner Chase Whitaker (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) for the eventual game winning run for the final score of 3-2.
Freshman pitcher Ethan Kramer (Sunman, Ind./East Central) had a no-decision as he pitched five and a third innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits and struck out three. Freshman pitcher Adam Ruwe (Park Hills, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched two-thirds of an inning and earned the win as he didn't allow a hit or run and struck out one.
Ruberg pitched a scoreless seventh inning and allowed one hit and struck out to earn his sixth save of the season. The save also gave Ruberg his 13th career saves and making him the all-time saves leader in Thomas More history. He broke the previous mark of 12, which was held by David Etscheid (2010-13).
At the plate, three Saints had multiple hits in the game as Kenning was two-for-three with a home run, a double, one run scored and two RBI, freshman catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three and Abbatiello was two-for-three with a RBI.
Thomas More returns to action on Friday (April 22) when it hosts Grove City College in a PAC single nine-inning game at Thomas More Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
