Saints comeback comes up short against Thorobreds

(FLORENCE, KY) - The Thomas More University baseball team fell to Kentucky State in Tuesday's (March 31) non-conference doubleheader by a score of 11-10. The Saints fall to 11-14 on the season.
How they scored
  • Thomas More got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as senior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) stole home after reaching on a lead off double down the left field line.
  • Junior Noah McCarty (Louisville, KY / Christian Academy of Louisville) hit a two run home run to right center field.
  • Junior Ty Cunningham's (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) infield single allowed freshman Sean O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny / USC Lancaster) to score as the Saints took a 4-0 lead.
  • Kentucky State scored 1 run in the top of the third.
  • Noah McCarty's second hit scored sophomore Chad Atchley (Peach Grove, KY / Simon Kenton) in the bottom of the fourth before Noah McCarty scored on a freshman Jack Geers (Harrison, OH / Harrison) home run to left field as Thomas More expanded their lead to 7-1.
  • Kentucky State scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth to quickly close the gap before four runs in the 6th and two runs in the 7th to give the visitors a 11-7 lead.
  • Thomas More attempted a comeback in the bottom of the 8th. Gunner Kalkhoff scored on a single from Freshman Ayden Holden (Williamsburg, OH / Williamsburg).Chad Atchley's single through the left side scored junior Matt Resing (Independence, KY / St. Henry) from third base. Ayden Holden scored on a sacrifice fly from Noah McCarty but the Saints came up a run short of tying the game.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff went 2-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. He also had a stolen base.
  • Noah McCarty went 2-3 with a home run, 4 RBIs and 2 two runs scored.
  • Matt Resing went 2-4 with a double and a run.
  • Jack Geers had a home run for his only hit but drew 2 walks
  • Dylan Thompson got the start and went 4 innings. He allowed just 1 run on four hits while striking out 7 batters.
  • Aaron Wichman came in for the final inning of the game. Allowed 1 hit and struck out three.

 
Up Next
The Saints will travel to Ohio Dominican on Friday and Saturday (April 3-4). Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
