Saints split doubleheader with Ohio Dominican

(COLUMBUS, OH) – The Thomas More University baseball team split with Ohio Dominican in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday (April 2). The saints won the first game 8-7 in comeback fashion before falling 9-19 in game two. The Saints are now 12-15 overall on the season and 5-9 within the conference.
 
How they scored
Game 1: Thomas More 8 – Ohio Dominican 7
  • The Panthers took a 1-0 lead after the first inning before the Saints scored two in the top of the second. Senior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) scored on a double to left center by freshman Ian Mann (Newport, KY / Newport Central Catholic) after Gunner Kalkhoff had reached on a lead off single to center field. Ian Mann later scored as sophomore Drew Barth (Fort Thomas, KY / Highland) laid down a bunt to the pitcher.
  • Ohio Dominican scored four in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Thomas More worked on their comeback in the top of the seventh inning as Ian Mann, who had reached on a double to left field, scored his second run of the day as freshman Sean O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny / USC Lancaster) hit an infield single. Sean O'Donnell scored from second as junior Ty Cunningham (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) hit a single to left field.
  • The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff's outfield single scored junior Nolan Krekeler (Loveland, OH / Moeller) who had reached on a double early in the top of the eighth inning. Gunner Kalkhoff and junior Matt Resing (Independence, KY / St. Henry) both scored as Drew Barth had hit a single to right field. Ian Mann scored on a Sean O'Donnell sacrifice fly as the Saints took a 8-6 lead.
  • While the Panthers scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth, back to back strikeouts from sophomore Aaron Wichmann (Burlington, KY / Conner) ended the inning and finished the scoring of the first game.
Game Two: Ohio Dominican 19 – Thomas More 9
  • Thomas More scored in the first inning as freshman Jack Geers (Harrison, OH / Harrison) scored on a left field single from Nolan Krekeler.
  • Ohio Dominican quickly responded with five runs in the first and eight runs in the second to take a 13-1 lead. The added one more run in the third inning before Matt Resing's two run home run in the top of the fourth inning gave the Saints a couple more runs.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Sean O'Donnell scored on a Nolan Krekeler single before he scored himself on a Matt Resing single up the middle. Gunner Kalkhoff scored a Ian Mann hit one down the left field line before sophomore Chad Atchley's (Peach Grove, KY / Simon Kenton) right field line single scored Matt Resing.
  • The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth before scoring their final four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Matt Resing scored in the top of the seventh inning on a passed ball. Ian Mann had the final run scored as he crossed the plate during a double-play on the other side of the diamond.
 

Game 1: Game 2:  

Game 1:
  • Redshirt sophomore Joe Stone (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) got the start and went 7 innings. He allowed 10 hits, 6 runs, and struck out four.
  • Aaron Wichmann pitched two innings of relief. He faced 10 batters, striking out three, allowing a walk, 3 hits and a run.
Game 2:
  • Senior Kellan Sandhas (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) got the start before freshman Finn O'Keefe (Loveland, OH / Moeller) came in for an inning of relief.
  • Senior Cody Watkins (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) finished the game for the Saints.
 
Up Next
The Saints will conclude the series tomorrow (April 3) in Columbus against the Panthers with another doubleheader on the slate. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
