Saints Split Doubleheader With Washington & Jefferson

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, May 7, 2016) at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.  The Saints won game one, 8-7, but fell, 9-2, in the nightcap.

With the split, the Saints are now 26-8 overall and 20-3 in the PAC and the Presidents are now 23-15 overall and 15-8 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored one run in the second, three in the fourth and four in the seventh, while W&J plated two runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.  The Saints took the 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh inning when senior first baseman Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) hit a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field and it would hold up as Thomas More shut down the Presidents in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-7 victory.

Thomas More was led at the plate by sophomore third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), who was three-for-three with two runs batted-in and freshman catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was two-for-four with a run scored.

Senior pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned a no-decision as he pitched three and two-third innings and gave up six runs (all earned) on six hits and struck out three.  Freshman pitcher Adam Ruwe (Park Hills, Ky./Covington Catholic) earned the win as he pitched two and a third innings of relief and gave up one run (earned) on four hits and struck out one.  Junior Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the save as he pitched a hitless seventh inning and struck out two.

In the nightcap, W&J scored four in the second, two in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth and held Thomas More to one run in the third and one in the fourth for the 9-2 victory.

The Saints were led offensively by sophomore second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was two-for-three with a double and a RBI.

Senior pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss on the mound as he pitched four innings and gave up six runs (all earned) on nine hits and struck out four.

Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson will close out the three-game series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game starting at 12 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park.
