Saints split in two extra inning games on Friday night

(FLORENCE, KY) – The Thomas More University baseball team split Friday's (April 17) doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan as the Saints fell 15-12 in ten innings before getting the walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth 8-6 in the second game.
 
How they scored
Game 1: Kentucky Wesleyan 15 – Thomas More 12 (10 innings)
  • Kentucky Wesleyan got out to a 6-0 lead before senior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) and junior Nolan Krekeler (Loveland, OH / Moeller) both scored on a sophomore Drew Barth (Fort Thomas, KY / Highlands) single to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Panthers extended the lead to 9-2.
  • Junior Matt Resing (Independence, KY / St. Henry) scored as freshman Theodore Bosio (Grand Rapids, MI / Forest Hills Northern) reached on a throwing error. Theodore Bosio then scored as junior Ty Cunningham (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) singled up the middle.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan scored two runs on a home run to centerfield in the top of the seventh.
  • Thomas More had two two-run homers in the bottom of the seventh as Nolan Krekeler went to right field, scoring freshman Jack Geers (Harrison, OH / Harrison) who had drawn a walk before senior Riley Poston (Lancaster, OH / Lancaster) hit the ball over the left center field wall scoring Matt Resing who had singled up the middle.
  • The Panthers had a run score in the eighth inning.
  • Jack Geers hit a solo home run to left field before Gunner Kalkhoff hit his own solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the 8th.
  • Theodore Bosio was able to score on a fielding error by the Panthers before freshman Sean O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny / USC Lancaster) scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
  • The Panthers scored three in the top of the 10th and were able to hold off the Saints in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 15-12 win.
Game 2: Thomas More 8 – Kentucky Wesleyan 6
  • Kentucky Wesleyan scored a run in the top of the second off a solo home run.
  • The Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Ian Mann (Newport, KY / Newport Central Catholic) scored on a wild pitch before Riley Poston scored on an infield single by Sean O'Donnell. After stealing second and third base, Sean O'Donnell scored on a wild pitch. Jack Geers scored as Nolan Krekeler hit a single through the right side of the infield.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game with two runs in the top of the third and a run in the top of the fourth inning. The score would remain tied 4-4 through seven innings, as the teams went to their second extra inning game of the day.
  • In the top of 8th inning, Kentucky Wesleyan scored two runs on a single through the left side.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Sean O'Donnell scored on a fielders choice. Then down to his final strike, Nolan Krekeler hit a three-run home run to right center field to walk off the game for the Saints.
 

Game 1:
  • Riley Poston went 3-6 with a home run and a double, driving in two runs.
  • Drew Barth went 3-6 with two RBIs.
  • Matt Resing went 3-5 with three singles and a hit by pitch. He scored twice.
  • Nolan Krekeler went 2-6 with a home run. He scored twice and drove in three runs.
  • Gunner Kalkhoff's only hit was a home run. He scored twice after reaching on a hit by pitch.
  • Jack Geers went 1-4 with a home run, a walk, and reached on a hit by pitch. He had two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game 2:
  • Nolan Krekeler went 2-4 with a home run. He had 4 RBIs.
  • Ian Mann went 2-3 with two singles and a walk. He scored a run.
  • Matt Resing had two walks, an RBI and scored a run.
  • Sean O'Donnell went 1-2, had an RBI, a walk and scored twice.
 

Game 1:
  • Redshirt sophomore Joe Stone (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) got the start and went three innings. He allowed eight hits, six runs with five earned. He walked two batters and had a strikeout.
  • Freshman Adam Forton (Fort Thomas, KY / Highlands) went two innings of relief allowing two runs on one hit while striking out three of the ten batters he faced.
  • Freshman Chase Maggard (Hamilton, OH / Badin) and freshman Keeton Bach (Augusta, KY / Augusta) each had an inning of work on the mound.
  • Sophomore Aaron Wichmann (Burlington, KY / Conner) finished the game with three innings of work. He had three strikeouts while allowing four runs on five hits.
Game 2:
  • Senior Kellen Sandhas (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) went four innings in his start, striking out four of the twenty batters he faced.
  • Sophomore Logan Cones (Independence, KY / Simon Kenton) went 3.1 innings before sophomore Cameron Snider (Amelia, OH / Bethel-Tate) came in to finish the game with a strikeout and allowing a walk.
 
Up Next
The Saints will have tomorrow off before finishing the series with Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday with another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The team will also honor the 2011 and 2016 Thomas More baseball teams for their anniversaries of their President Athletics Conference Championships during Alumni Day.
