Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College softball team swept Westminster College today (Friday, April 29, 2016) in its final regular season Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 5-4, in eight inning and 4-1 in the nightcap.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 30-8 overall and 15-3 in the PAC, while the Titans fall to 23-13 overall and 16-2 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Westminster led 4-0 after five and a half inning as it plated one run in the first, two in the third and one in the sixth. Thomas More cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth as freshman third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ohio/Highlands) had a double scoring junior pinch runner Kayla Fulcher (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) and then sophomore left fielder Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) had a single scoring Quillen and senior pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry).
In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints tied the game at 4-4 and forced extra innings when freshman pinch runner Jalee Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored on a single by Quillen. Thomas More won the game in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore center fielder/catcher Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) double and then scored on a Westminster error during the next at-bat for the 4-3 victory.
The Saints were led at the plate by Salzer, who was two-for-three with a double and a run scored, Quillen, who was two-for-three with a double, a run scored and two runs batted-in and Finke, who was two-for-four with a double and a run scored.
Salzer earned the win in the circle as she pitched all eight innings and gave up four runs (all earned) on eight hits and struck out two.
In the nightcap, Westminster took a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth. In the fifth, senior shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) scored on a RBI double by freshman right fielder/left fielder Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) and senior pinch runner Krista Summe (Forest Park, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) scored on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Bree Appel (Amelia, Ohio/Batavia). Then in the sixth inning, Walter had a RBI single scoring Fulcher and DeDreu earned a bases loaded walk scoring Finke for the final score of 4-1.
Four Saints had multiple hits in the game as Walter was two-for-four with a run scored and a RBI, Quillen was two-for-three with a double, Appel was two-for-four with a RBI and Salzer was two-for-three.
Knotts earned the win in the circle as she pitched six innings and gave up one run (earned) on seven hits and struck out four. Salzer earned the save as she pitched one inning and didn't allow a hit or run.
Thomas More will be the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament hosted by top-seeded Westminster in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. The full tournament seeding and pairings will be announced later this weekend by the PAC office.
