Box Score (LATROBE, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team belted out 19 hits today (Wednesday, April 27, 2016) in a 19-5 win over Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Bearcat Ballfield in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 24-7 overall and 18-2 in the PAC. Thomas More's magic number to clinch at least a share of the PAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PAC Championship Tournament is one game. The Saints can clinch with one more conference win or a conference loss by Thiel College. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 16-18 overall and 9-12 in the PAC.
Thomas More scored two runs in the second, two in the third, seven in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the eighth, while holding Saint Vincent to one run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 19-5 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out one.
Six Saints had multiple hits in the game led by sophomore designated hitter Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton), who was three-for-four with a double, three runs scored and three runs batted-in. Senior left fielder Zach Fardo (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) was three-for-four with two runs scored and a RBI, junior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a double, a run scored and three RBI, junior right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI, senior first baseman Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was two-for-three with a double, three runs scored and two RBI and freshman catcher Tyler Harley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman pinch hitter Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was one-for-one as he hit a three-run home run.
Thomas More returns to action on Friday (April 29) when it travels to Bethany, West Virginia to play Bethany College at 4 p.m.
