(KISSIMMEE, Fla.) – The Saints start off strong this season advancing to 3-1 by defeating the Central College Dutch and the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets on Monday (March 7, 2016) in Kissimmee, Florida.
To start the day, the Saints faced off with the Dutch, currently ranked 21st in the nation, topping them with a score of 5-3. In the circle, senior Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) earned the win, ultimately passing 2011 graduate Dana Bors for most career wins on the mound. With this addition, Salzer now holds the record for career wins as well as shares the record for most wins in a single season. At the plate, three Saints went .500 against the Dutch ace: senior Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon), sophomore Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and sophomore Bree Appel (Amelia, Ohio/Batavia).
Finishing the day in the circle, sophomore pitcher Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) earned her second career shutout and eight career win, allowing the Yellow Jackets only one hit. The Saints earned five runs in the shutout, with multiple Saints collecting multiple hits.
Freshman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands) and sophomore catcher Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) batted 1.000 in the game, while Salzer collected two hits in the win as well.
The Saints hit the dirt again tomorrow at Oren Brown Softball Park facing off against Hiram College at 9 a.m. and Trine University at 11a.m.
