Box Score 2 (LATROBE, Pa.) - The Thomas More College baseball team dropped both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Saint Vincent College today (Wednesday, April 23, 2014) at Bearcat Ballfield in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Saint Vincent won game one, 1-0, and game two, 2-1.
With sweep, the Saints fall to 15-15 overall and 9-8 in the PAC and the Bearcats improve to 16-17 overall and 10-9 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Saint Vincent plated the lone run of the game in the third inning for the 1-0 win.
Sophomore pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss despite only giving up one run (unearned) on four hits in six inning pitch, while striking out five and only walking one.
Junior first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was the lone Saint with multiple hits in the game as he was two-for-three. Junior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) reach base twice as he was one-for-two at the plate and walked once.
In the second game of the day, Saint Vincent took a 1-0 lead in the second and then Thomas More tied the game at 1-1 in fourth with a run. In the bottom of the seventh, Saint Vincent had a walk-off single for the 2-1 win.
Senior shortstop Tyler Graber (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) led the Saints at the plate as he was two-for-two. Senior second baseman Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and senior right fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) each had a hit for the Saints.
Freshman pitcher Vic Newberry (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) took the loss on the mound as he pitched six and third innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits and struck out one.
Thomas More will travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday (April 26 and 27) to play Westminster College in a three-game PAC series at Titan Field. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single-game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
