Box Score (GREENVILLE, Pa.) - Senior right fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Thomas More College baseball team to a 9-8 win over Thiel College today (Monday, March 31, 2014) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania. The Saints complete a three-game sweep of the Tomcats with the win as they defeated Thiel twice yesterday in a doubleheader.
With the win, the Saints improve to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 6-9 overall and 0-5 in the PAC.
Thiel led 8-7 after six innings as it scored one run in the fourth and seven in the sixth and the Saints plated one in the first, three in the fourth and three in the fourth. In the top of the ninth Makin put the Saints head 9-8 when he hit a two-run home run to right center field scoring freshman pinch runner Thomas Baumann (Union, Ky./Ryle) and himself and the Saints held Thiel scoreless in the bottom of the inning for the 9-8 victory.
Makin led the team at the plate as he was two-for-three with the home run, a double, two runs batted-in and three runs scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five with a double and a run scored, senior second baseman Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five and junior left fielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five with a RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) started and got a no-descision as he pitched five and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out four and walking four. Sophomore pitcher Chris Auer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) entered in relief and gave up three runs (all unearned) on three hits and walked one. Freshman pitcher Vic Newberry (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) earned the win as he pitched three and a third innings of shutout relief and gave up only three hits.
Thomas More returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 2) when it hosts Centre College in a nine-inning non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
