Baseball Completes Ninth Inning Comeback, Takes Down Cumberland

(Lebanon, Tenn.) - The baseball program at Thomas More University defeated Cumberland University by a score of 9-8 in game one of the three game series. With the win the Saints improve to 9-13 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

  • Cumberland scored one in the 2nd, four in the 4th, one in the 5th, 7th, and, 8th.
  • Thomas More scored one in the 4th and the 5th via Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) scoring on an error and Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) scored off of a fielders choice, bringing the score to 5-2 Phoenix.
  • The Saints plated two in the 7th as an Atwood single would bring around Casey Nowak (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic). Atwood would then come around to score on a fielders choice by Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton), making the score 6-4 CU.
  • TMU refused to quit, scoring two more in the top of the 8th as both Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/Lasalle) and Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) crossed the plate tying the score up heading into the bottom of the 8th.
  • After Cumberland re-took the lead the Saints would add three runs in the top of the 9th. Tyler Flick (Okeana, Ohio/Ross) scored after Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) was hit by a pitch. Pearson and Reynolds both scored on an error to give Thomas More its first lead of the game at 9-8.
  • Ty Grimes would shut the door on the Phoenix to pick up the win and move Thomas More to 4-1 in conference play.

  • Pearson batted two-for-three from the plate with three runs scored and drawing two walks.
  • Atwood went two-for-five, knocking in two runs while scoring two runs himself.
  • Nowak batted .500 on the day with a double and a run scored while drawing two walks.
  • Martin went one-for-four with a run batted in and a walk.

  • First-year pitcher Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched five innings allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out three batters.
  • Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched two and two-thrids innings allowing two runs on three hits.
  • Junior pitcher Ty Grimes (Miamisburg, Ohio./Miamisburg) pitched one and a third innings with three strikeouts and earning the win. 

Baseball returns to the diamond tomorrow, (March 21) where they will complete their three game series against Cumberland, game one of the doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. ET.
