Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Thomas More College dropped both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, March 31, 2018) at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.  W&J won game one 10-3 and the nightcap 6-5.

The Saints are now 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the PAC, while the Presidents are 11-8 overall and 4-0 in the PAC.

In the first game, W&J scored one in the first, four in the second and sixth and one in the seventh, while holding the Saints to two in the second and one in the ninth for the 10-3 victory.

Thomas More was led at the plate by junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was four-four-four wit ha double.  Senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four, while sophomore catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had a two-run home run in the second inning.

Senior pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) suffered the loss on the mound as he went five and a third innings and gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out two.

In the nightcap, Thomas More scored one in the first and three in the third, while holding W&J to three in the third and one in the fifth to have the game tied at 4-4 heading to the ninth.  In the top of the ninth the Saints to a 5-4 lead when senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) reached on a hit by pinch and then scored on a run batted-in single by junior first baseman/pitcher Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton).  W&J would answer with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 6-5.

Lawrence led the team at the plate as he was three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored.  Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as Hauer was two-for-four wit ha run scored, junior shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-five with a RBI and a run scored and junior right fielder Joshua Boeckman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with two RBI.

Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a no-decision as he pitched seven innings giving up four runs (all earned) on 10 hits and struck out two.  Sophomore  pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and gave up one hit.  Lawrence suffered the loss as he pitched the ninth and gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits.

The Saints return to action on Tuesday (April 3) when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play Heidelberg University.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
