Saints Open PAC Play With a Sweep of Waynesburg

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team swept Waynesburg University today (Friday, March 23, 2018) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 3-2, and the nightcap, 9-0.

The Saints improve to 4-7 overall and 2-0 in the PAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the PAC.

In the first game, Thomas More took a 1-0 in the third, but Waynesburg answered with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.  The Saints plated a pair of runs in the fifth and held the Jackets scoreless over the final four innings to post the 3-2 victory.

Thomas More was led at the plate by junior first baseman/pitcher Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton), who was two-for-four with a double and two runs batted-in.  Junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a run scored and a RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched one and a third innings of relief and earned the win as he didn't allow a run or a hit.  Lawrence picked up the save as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one, while giving up one hit.

The Saints' bats came alive in the second game as they had 17 hits and scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and three in the eighth and shutout out Waynesburg for the 9-0 victory.

Lawrence again led the team at the plate as he was four-for-four with a double, a run scored and one RBI.  Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertage (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was three-for-five with a run scored and senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-five with a double and three runs scored.  Hauer was two-for-four with a four RBI, junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five with a run scored and two RBI and sophomore catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a double, a run scored and a RBI.

Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six and a third shutout innings and gave up seven hits, while striking out four.

Thomas More returns to action on Sunday (March 25) when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play Marietta College.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Don Schaly Stadium.
