Thomas More Splits With Thiel

(GREENVILLE, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Thiel College today (Saturday, April 22, 2017) at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania.  The Saints won game one, 6-5, in eight innings, but the Tomcats won the nightcap, 3-0.

With the split, Thomas More is now 21-7 overall and 10-4 in the PAC and Thiel is 18-12 overall and 10-6 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored one in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth, but Thiel scored one in the third and four in the sixth to force extra innings.  In the top of the eight, senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a run batted-in single scoring sophomore Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) for the eventual game-winning run as the Saints shutdown Thiel in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a no-decision as he pitched five and two-third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits and struck out three.  Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win as he pitched two and a third shutout innings of relief and didn't allow a run, while striking out five.

Thomas More was led at the plate by Metzger, who was three-for-four with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.  Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a run scored, sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four and sophomore shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-four.

In the nightcap, Thiel scored three runs in the fourth and held Thomas More scoreless for the 3-0 victory.  Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) suffered the loss as he pitched four innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits and struck out one.  Junior pitcher Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched two shutout innings of relief and didn't allow a hit, while striking out one. 

Two Saints had multiple hits in the game as Lawrence was two-for-three and senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-three.

The two teams will close-out the three-game series tomorrow with a nine inning game starting at 12 p.m. at Tomcat Park.
