Box Score (WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Waynesburg University today (Wednesday, March 29, 2017) in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Thomas More won game one, 4-1, and Waynesburg won the nightcap, 3-2.
With the split, the Saints are 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the PAC and the Yellow Jackets are 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored three runs in the third and one in the fifth and held Waynesburg to a run in the fourth for the 4-1 victory. Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings and gave up one run (earned) on six hits and struck out four. Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning and didn't allow a hit, while striking out two.
Three Saints had multiple hits in the game. Senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-four with a two runs scored, junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-four with a run scored and two runs batted-in and senior right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a RBI.
In the nightcap, Thomas More scored one in the third and one in the fifth and Waynesburg scored twice in the third to have the game tied 2-2 after six inning. Thomas More wasn't able to plate a run in the top of the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets scored in a run in the bottom half of the inning for the 3-2 victory. Sophomore left fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the Saints' offense as he was two-for-three with a double and a run scored.
First-year pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched four and two-third innings and gave up two runs (both unearned) on five hits and struck out seven. Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched a third of an inning, while senior pitcher Josh Cain (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) suffered the loss as he pitched one innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits.
Thomas More returns to action on Sunday (April 2) when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play Marietta College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Don Schaly Stadium.
