Box Score 2 (KISSIMMEE, Fla.) – The Thomas More College softball team split two games on Tuesday (March 8, 2016) during the third day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Saints defeated Hiram College, 8-1, but fell 4-0 to Trine University.
With the split, the Saints are now 4-2 on the season.
In the win over Hiram, the Saints scored seven runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, while the Terriers only plated a run in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Alex DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings giving up one run (earned) on two hits and striking out five. The Saints were led at the plate by senior shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon), who was one-for-four with a run scored and two runs batted-in and freshman third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ohio/Highlands), who was one-for-two with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Senior pinch hitter Eva Sandmann (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) hit a home run in her only at-bat.
In game two of the day, Trine scored two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth, while holding Thomas More scoreless. At the plate, DeDreu, senior pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) and sophomore centerfielder Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) each had a hit in the game. In the circle, Salzer suffered the loss as she pitched five and a third innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out one. Knotts pitched one and two-thirds of inning of shutout relief and only gave up two hits.
Thomas More returns to action on Thursday (March 10) when it plays Bluffton University at 11:15 a.m. and Mitchell College at 1:30 p.m. at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
