Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The top-seeded Thomas More baseball team won two games today (Friday, May 8, 2015) on the second day of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Championship Tournament at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints defeated third-seeded Thiel College, 11-4, in their first elimination game and beat second-seeded Waynesburg University, 9-8, in the second elimination game.
With the two wins, the Saints improve to 29-11 and will play fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson College in the championship series. The first game is set for 10 a.m. and the "if necessary game" will be at 1 p.m. Thomas More must defeat W&J twice to win the championship and W&J must only win once.
In the first game of the day the Saints scored four games in the first inning, two in the third, two in the fifth and three in the eighth, while Thiel scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the ninth.
Junior pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win on the mound as he pitched all nine innings giving up four runs (two earned) on 11 hits and struck out four.
Thomas More was led at the plate by junior left fielder Zach Fardo (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart), who was three-for-four with a home run, a double, three runs batted-in and two runs scored and sophomore right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was three-for-five with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
In the second game, the game was tied at 8-8 after eight innings as the Saints scored two runs in the first, five in the second and one in the eighth and Waynesburg scored one in the first, two in the second, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) scored on a Waynesburg throwing error for the game-winner.
At the plate freshman third base Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was three-for-five with a run scored, senior first baseman Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-three with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored and Metzger was three-for-five with two doubles, one run scored and one RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win on the mound as he pitched two and two-third innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out one.
