Box Score 2 (WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader to Waynesburg University today (Saturday, May 2, 2015) at the Waynesburg Baseball Field in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Waynesburg won game one, 3-0, and the nightcap, 5-2.
With the sweep, the Saints fall to 27-10 overall and 18-6 in the PAC. Despite the two losses, the Saints clinched the PAC regular season, the No. 1 seed and hosting rights for next week's PAC Championship Tournament due to Thiel College falling to Saint Vincent College today. Waynesburg improves to 19-16-1 overall and 17-7 in the PAC and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC Tournament. Thiel College and Washington & Jefferson College round out next week's participants in the four-team tournament as the Tomcats will be the No. 3 seed and the Presidents will be the No. 4 seed.
In the first game of the day, Waynesburg scored one run in the second and two in the fifth, while holding the Saints scoreless for the 3-0 win.
Junior pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss on the mound as he pitched six innings giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out five.
Offensively, senior first baseman Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and junior designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) each had a hit for the Saints.
In the nightcap, Waynesburg scored four in the first and one in the fifth and Thomas More plated one run in the third and one in the fifth as the Yellow Jackets won the game, 5-2.
At the plate, the Saints were led by junior left fielder Zach Fardo (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart), who was two-for-two with a double and sophomore center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was two-for-three with a run scored.
On the mound, freshman pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Laurenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) suffered the loss as pitched one inning giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and striking out one.
The four-team double-elimination PAC Tournament is scheduled for Thursday–Saturday (May 7-9) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Game times will be announced by the PAC office tonight at www.pacathletics.org.
