No. 25 Thomas More Sweeps PAC Tripleheader With Washington & Jefferson

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The 25th-ranked Thomas More College baseball team swept a rare Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tripleheader with Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, April 18, 2015) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 4-3, the second game, 1-0, and the third game, 5-4, in eight innings.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 22-7 overall and 14-3 in the PAC and the Presidents fall to 18-10 overall and 10-7 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, the Saints scored one in the first, two in the fourth and one in the sixth and held W&J to one in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the eighth for the 4-3 victory.

On the mound, junior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win as he pitched seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out one.  Sophomore pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the saved as he pitched two innings of relief and gave up one run (earned) on two hits.

Senior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) led the team at the plate as he was three-for-four with a double, a triple, a run batted-in and two runs scored, while senior first baseman Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a double and a run scored.

In the middle game, the Saints scored a run in the first inning and then junior pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a complete game seven inning shutout as he gave up four hits and struck out six for the 1-0 victory.

Connor led the team at the plate as he was two-for-three with a double.

In the final game of the day, W&J took a 4-0 lead with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth.  Thomas More scored four runs in the sixth inning and forced extra innings.  In the bottom of the eighth, Popham hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Connor for the game-winning run.

Junior designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) led the Saints offensively as he was three-for-three with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Ruberg earned the win on the mound as he pitched three shutout innings of relief and gave up only two hits, while striking out four.

Thomas More returns to the diamond on Wednesday (April 22) when it travels to Greenville, Pennsylvania for a single nine-inning game.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Tomcat Park.
