Box Score 2 (WAYNESBURG, Pa.) - The Thomas More College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Waynesburg University today (Sunday, April 13, 2014) at the WU softball complex in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Waynesburg won game one, 4-3, in 12 innings and the Saints won the nightcap, 5-2.
With the split, the Saints are 18-7 overall and 7-1 in the PAC and the Yellow Jackets are 6-18 overall and 2-8 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Thomas More took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning and Waynesburg tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the. In the 12th inning, the Saints scored a run to take a 3-2 lead, but Waynesburg answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 12th for the 4-3 win.
Senior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched 11.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits and struck out 10, while walking five.
The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore designated player/right fielder Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry), who was two-for-six with a run batted-in and one run scored and senior third baseman Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon), who was two-for-five with a RBI.
In game two, the Saints scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth and fifth, while holding the Yellow Jackets to a run in the second and one in the sixth for the 5-2 win.
Salzer earned the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out 10 and walking two.
Sophomore shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) was two-for-three with a RBI and two runs scored and senior center fielder Ashley Shouse (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) was two-for-two with two RBI and a run scored.
The Saints return to the diamond on Wednesday (April 16) when they host Washington & Jefferson College in a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
