Makin Homers Twice In Saints' Doubleheader Sweep of Washington & Jefferson

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Junior center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) homered twice today (Tuesday, April 16, 2013) and the Thomas More College baseball team swept Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) preseason favorite Washington & Jefferson College in a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints came from behind to win game one, 7-6, and won the nightcap, 5-0.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 19-7 overall and 10-4 in the PAC and the Presidents' fall to 16-9 overall and 12-5 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, W&J led 6-5 after six innings as it scored three in the second and three in the fourth, while the Saints scored four in the third and one in the fifth.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints tied the game at 6-6 on a Makin sacrifice fly scoring senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) and then freshman pinch hitter Marcus Woelfel (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) had a run batted-in single scoring junior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) for the game-winning score.

Sophomore pitcher Tyler Jones (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned a no-decision as he pitched four innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits.  Junior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned the win as he pitched three scoreless innings of relief and gave up only one hit, while striking out two.

Miller led the team at the plate as he was four-for-four with a RBI and three runs scored.  Makin was two-for-three with a home run, four RBI and a run scored and sophomore first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-four.

In the nightcap, the Saints scored three in the four and two in the sixth and held Washington & Jefferson scoreless for the 5-0 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) earned the win as he pitched six scoreless innings and gave up five hits and struck out seven.  Roenker pitched one inning of relief and gave up two hits.

At the plate, freshman designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ky./St. Xavier) was two-for-three with a double and two RBI, Makin was one-for-two with a home run, three RBI and a run scored and Hyson was one-for-three with a double and a run scored.

Thomas More returns to the diamond tomorrow (Wednesday, April 17) when it hosts in-state rival Centre College.  First pitch of the non-conference game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
