Softball Sweeps Shawnee State as Gels records 12 Strikeouts

(Crestview Hills, Ky.) – The Thomas More University softball team swept Shawnee State in a Friday (April, 7th) afternoon doubleheader. The Saints took game 1 by a score of 3 to 2 before taking game 2 by a score of 6 to 5. Senior Annika Gels (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton) recorded 12 strikeouts across 9 innings pitched on the day. Saints move to an overall record of 16-11 with a Mid South record of 7-8.

Game 1: Thomas More wins 3-2
  • Junior Josie Wefer (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) grounded into a fielders choice that brought home a run to give Thomas More the early lead. (1-0)
  • Junior Delaney Kemper (Williamstown, Ky. / Williamstown) would follow in the next at bat with a 2 run home run to give Thomas more a 3 run lead in the first inning. (3-0)
  • Shawnee State would score 2 runs in the top of the 7th. (3-2)
 
Game 2: Thomas More wins 6-5
  • Shawnee State opened the game with a run in the top of the first. (0-1)
  • First year Sophia Thomas (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) hit a RBI single in the second inning to tie the game at 1. (1-1)
  • Shawnee State would answer in the top of the 3rd to retake the lead. (1-2)
  • Maclai Branson hit an RBI single to tie the game for the Saints. (2-2)
  • Josie Wefer hit a single to left field that brought home two more Thomas More runs. (4-2)
  • Sophia Thomas reached on a fielders choice that brought home a run to stretch the TMU lead. (5-2)
  • Shawnee State scored 3 runs in the 5th to tie it up. (5-5)
  • Delaney Kemper hit her second home run of the day to take back the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning. (6-5)

 

Game 1:
  • Delaney Kemper went 1-2 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a home run, and a run scored.
  • Graduate student Maclai Branson (Union, Ky. / Ryle) went 2-3 at the plate including a triple and a run scored.
  • Senior Hailey McAdoo (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mercy McAuley) went 1-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Josie Wefer collected an RBI at the plate.
 
Game 2:
  • Josie Wefer went 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a run scored and a double.
  • Hailey McAdoo went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
  • Delaney Kemper went 1-2 at the plate with a walk, home run, RBI and run scored.
  • Sophia Thoma collected 2 RBIs as she went 1-3 at the plate.
  • Maclai Branson went 1-3 and recorded an RBI and a run scored.

 

Game 1:
  • Annika Gels (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) went the complete 7 innings for the Saints. She allowed 2 runs across 7 hits and struck out 9 on her way to getting the win. 
 
Game 2:
  • Sophomore Karys Black (Burlington, Ky. / Boone County) pitched 5 innings for the Saints, allowing 3 earned runs and 5 total runs on 6 hits. She recorded a strikeout and picked up the win.
  • Annika Gels came on in relief and pitched 2 innings of shutout softball. She struck out 3 and picked up the save.
