Softball Bested In A Pair Of Games At Cumberlands (Ky.)

(WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.) – The Thomas More University softball team fell in a pair of games to Mid-South Conference foe and No. 3 ranked University of the Cumberlands Sunday afternoon, 15-2 and 4-3. The losses drop the Saints to 14-11 overall and 5-8 in the MSC.

 How they scored

Game 1: Cumberlands (Ky.) defeats Thomas More, 15-2.
  • The Saints took the lead in the top of the first inning.
  • Hailey McAdoo (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) and Maclai Branson (Union, Ky./Ryle/University of Kentucky/Miami University (OH)) both hit singles to begin the inning.
  • Karys Black (Burlington, Ky./Boone County) reached via an error to load the bases with no one out.
  • After a pair of strikeouts, Josie Wefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills/Morehead State University) came through with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
  • The Saints got one more hit during the game.
  • Cumberlands scored two in the first, six in the second, and seven in the third inning.
 
Game 2: Cumberlands (Ky.) defeats Thomas More, 4-3.
  • The Patriots held a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning.
  • Thomas More made a pair of quick outs in the fifth but a fielder's choice left them with a runner on.
  • A McAdoo single put runners on first and third.
  • Branson then stepped up and hit her sixth home run of the season, a clutch three-run blast that gave Thomas More the 3-2 lead.
  • The lead would hold until the Patriots tied it up in the bottom of the seventh and won it on a walk-off homer in the eighth.

  • Branson, McAdoo, and Wefer provided the hits for Thomas More.
  • Wefer had two RBI.
  • McAdoo and Branson scored a run.
 
Game 2:
  • McAdoo led the Saints with two hits.
  • Branson had three RBI.
  • Branson, McAdoo, and Ashtyn Elbe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) all scored a run.

 

Game 1:
  • Annika Gels (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) allowed eight runs (six earned) over 1.2 innings while striking out one Patriot.
  • Emily Wisman (Okeana, Ohio/Harrison) pitched the final 2.1 innings.
  • She allowed seven runs, with none of them being earned.
 
Game 2:
  • Karys Black pitched the whole game for Thomas More.
  • She allowed four runs and struck out three batters.

The Saints are back on the road in Columbus, Indiana at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) on Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Crimson Pride beginning at 3:00 p.m.
