Softball Sweeps Union on Opening Day

(BARBOURVILLE, Ky.)-Thomas More University softball team swept Union (Ky.) in their. opening day series on Friday afternoon (February 10) 14-13 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

How they scored
Game 1: Thomas More 14-13
  • In the top of the first inning, first year Sophia Thoma (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) hit a sac fly to right field to score Graduate Student Maclai Branson (Union, Ky./Ryle)  to put the Saints on the board 1-0. Sophomore Karys Black (Burlington, Ky./Boone County)  would score on a wild pitch to extend the Saints lead to 2-0. Sophomore Emma Kent (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) singled to center field to send in junior Delaney Kemper (Williamstown, Ky./Williamstown) to make it a 3-0 game.
  • Union would score four runs in the bottom of the first to put them ahead 3-4.
  • Senior Hailey McAdoo (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) scored off a single hit to left field by Delaney Kemper in the top of the second inning to tie the game up at 4-4. Maclai Branson would score off the same play off of an error by the left fielder to give the Saints the go ahead run (5-4). Sophia Thoma would step up the plate next and single to center field to send in Delaney Kemper to make it a 6-4 game. Sophia Thoma would score to extend the lead to 6-4 off a single hit to center field by senior Becca Mowen (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton).
  • Union would score four runs in the bottom of the second inning to help them regain the lead over the Saints once again (7-8).
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Union scored one run to put the Saints down by two (7-9).
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Sophia Thoma hit a single to right center to send in Hailey McAdoo and senior Kaylee Beal (Bright, Ind./East Central) to tie the game up at 9-9. Becca Mowen would step up to the plate and hit the ball to the other side of the outfield, to score Sophia Thoma and Delaney Kemper and put the Saints ahead 11-9. Junior Kai Dickerson (Walton, Ky./Ryle) scored on an error by the center fielder off a hit ball by senior Sydney Bledsoe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) to extend the lead to 12-9.
  • Union scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning (12-10).
  • In the bottom of sixth inning, Union scored two runs to tie the game up at 12-12.
  • Hailey McAdoo sent in Kaylee Beal and junior Sarah Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) on a single hit to left field in the top of the seventh to hel the Saints regain the lead (14-12).
  • Union scored one in the bottom of the seventh inning but came up short to the Saints.
Game 2: Thomas More 4-3
  • Karys Black hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning to score Hailey McAdoo to put the Saints on the board 1-0.
  • Union scored one run in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the bottom of the fourth to put them 1-2.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, junior Josie Wefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) singled to left fielf to send in Karys Black for the tying run (2-2). Sydney Bledsoe would double to left field to score Sophia Thoma for the go ahead run (3-2).
  • Union scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game back up at 3-3.
  • Maclai Branson hit a solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning for the Saints winning run (4-3).

Game 1: Game 2:

Game 1:
  • Emma Kent pitched 2.2 innings, giving up nine earned runs off of six hits and struck out five.
  • Senior Emily Wisman (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) pitched four innings, giving up four earned runs off of seven hits and struck out one. 

Game 2:
  • Karys Black pitched 7 innings, giving up three earned runs off of six hits and struck out five.

The Saints return to action next Saturday (February 18) on Thomas More Field against Trinity International in a double header beginning at 2:00 pm ET.
