Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.)-Thomas More University baseball team split with the Phoenix of Cumberland University in games one and two of the Opening Round series, falling by a score of 16-5 and winning on a walk-off by the score of 6-5. With the win the Saints improve to 30-15 on the season and will advance to a decisive game three tomorrow.
Game 1:
- Cumberland scored on run in the first inning, five runs in the fifth inning, and four runs in the fourth inning (10-0).
- Senior Aiden Reverman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) singled to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to score junior Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) to put the Saints on the board 10-1. First year AJ Enginger (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) singled to right field to send in sophomore Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry).
- Cumberland scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning (14-2).
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) advanced home on an error to make it a 14-3 game. Junior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) grounded out to third base to score sophomore Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) (14-4).
- First year Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning (14-5).
- Cumberland scored two runs in the top of the seventh (16-5).
Game 2:
- Senior Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) singled to the shortstop to send in Pearson to get the Saints on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning (1-0).
- Vogelgesang doubled to left center field to score Baldock and Reverman to extend the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning.
- Cumberland scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game up at 3-3.
- Vogelgesang doubled through the left side in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the Saints regain the lead by sending in Vogelgesang and AJ Enginger (5-3).
- Cumberland would add two runs via a home run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5.
- Vogelgesang would step up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to hit a walk-off single, scoring Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) from second to win 6-5.
Game 1:
- Reverman went 2-3 at the plate with one run batted in
- Enginger was 2-3 with an rbi.
Game 2:
- Vogelgesang went three-for-five in the game with three rbi's, one run scored, and a double.
- Pearson also collected three hits in five plate appearances with two rbi's, one run scored, and a double.
- Martin went two-for-four with an rbi and a walk.
- Enginger notched two hits in four plate appearances with a run scored.
Game 1:
- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 4 innings, giving up 10 runs (six earned) off eight hits, and struck out two.
- Junior left-handed pitcher Hunter Nantz (London, Ky./North Laurel) pitched three innings, giving up six earned runs off nine hits, and struck out one.
Game 2:
- Landon Scott (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) threw 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on two hits while striking out four.
- Sophomore Zach Dugan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits.
- First-year Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the winning after pitching the final frame without allowing a run.
Baseball will return to the diamond tomorrow, April 30 in a winner take all game three MSC Opening Round series against Cumberland at 12 p.m. ET.
