Baseball Sweeps Wright State-Lake in Day Two Double Header

Crestview Hills, Ky. - The baseball program at Thomas More took down the Lakers of Wright State-Lake in day two of their double header by scores of 11-1 and 8-6. With the sweeps the Saints improve to 18-10 on the season.

Game One: Thomas More wins 11-1 in five innings.

  • Senior Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) would double in the top of the first inning to score Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky. / Randall K. Cooper) to take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • A Casey Nowak (Covington, Ky./Covington Catholic) single would score teammate Aiden Reverman (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota West) from third to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • Martin would hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to score Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry) taking a 3-0 lead into the third.
  • Wright State-Lake would score their lone run in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.
  • Pearson would score Reverman on a single then come around to score on an error to push the lead to 5-1.
  • Nowak would draw a walk in the bottom of the fifth to score Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) to grow the lead to 6-1.
  • Pearson would also draw a walk with the bases loaded to score first-year pinch runner Danny Flanigan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) from third.
  • Martin would once again score Baldock, this time with a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 8-1.
  • Junior Derek Atwood (Burlington, Ky./Conner) would pick up an rbi by walking in Nowak from third.
  • Junior Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) would also draw a walk in the bottom of the fifth to score Pearson from third.
  • Benzinger would end the game with a single to score Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) to bring the final to 11-1.

  • Pearson went two-for-three from the dish with three runs scored and two rbi's with a walk.
  • Martin went a perfect two-for-two at the plate with three rbi's and a walk.
  • Reverman went two-for-two in the game as well with two runs scored.
  • Benzinger went picked up two hits in three at bats with one run score, one run batted in, and drew a walk.

  • Sophomore Mason Berger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits.
  • Senior Mitch Mierke (Milford, Ohio/Milford) threw the final 1 1/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits.

Game Two: Thomas More wins 8-6.

  • In the bottom of the first Nowak would score on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead after one.
  • Pearson would draw a walk with the bases loaded for the second time of the day in the bottom of the second to score Reverman from third.
  • Bailey Martin would garner a bases load walk to close out the second to bring home Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio / Franklin) from third who was courteous running for Brennan Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) to bring the score to 3-0.
  • Vogelgesang would steal home in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • The Lakers would add a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Noah Weingartner would score off a single by Pearson to grow the lead to 5-1.
  • Bailey Martin would single in the bottom of the fourth to score Nowak from to increase the lead to 6-1.
  • Wright State-Lake would add three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4.
  • Benzinger would hit a crucial two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to score himself and Bailey Martin to bring the tally to 8-4.
  • The Lakers would try to rally in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs but would fall shorts as the Saints would win 8-6.

  • Bailey Martin would go two-for-three at the dish with two rbi's and a run scored.
  • Weingartner would go two-for-three in the game with one run scored.
  • Benzinger would pick up one hit in four at bats, the one hit being a home run to add two rbi's and a run scored to his day.
  • Nowak would go 0-1 from the plate but would draw three walks in the game.
  • Pearson went one-for-two with two rbi's, a run scored, and drew a walk.

  • Sophomore Hunter Nantz (London, Ky. / North Laurel) pitched five innings allowing one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts.
  • Graduate Kyle Fieger (Ft. Mitchell, Ky. / Beechwood) allowed no runs and one hit in one inning pitched.
  • First-year Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) allowed two runs on one hit while striking out two in an inning of work.
