Baseball Earns Gritty Win Over Cumberland

Florence, Ky. - The baseball program at Thomas More earned a series split with Cumberland on Saturday (February 26), after taking down the Phoenix by a 5-4 score. With the win the Saints improve to 7-5 on the year and 1-1 in MSC play.

  • Cumberland would jump on the board first with a sac fly in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Thomas More would answer back via a Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) single that would drive home Gavin Pearson (Burlington, Ky. / Randall K. Cooper) from third to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Phoenix would once again take the lead on a double that would score two in the top of the second.
  • The resiliency of the Saints would show up as Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) would drive in Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky. / New Richmond) on a triple to bring the score to 3-2.
  • Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio / Franklin) would then score Vogelgesang on a single to tie the game back up at three all.
  • In the bottom of the fifth Thomas More would earn their first lead of the game as catcher Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) would hit a no doubt home run to give the Saint a 5-3 lead.
  • Cumberland would make one last comeback attempt by adding a run in the top of the eighth, but that is as close as it would get making the final score 5-4.

  • Caruso would bat .500 on the day with a home run, collecting two rbi's.
  • Vogelgesang also collected two hits in three plate appearances with one rbi, one run scored, and would draw a walk.
  • Pearson went two-for-four from the dish with a double and a run scored, while drawing a walk, and picked up a stolen base.
  • Brady Baldock (Burlington, Ky./Saint Henry) notched two in the hit collumn for Thomas More with four plate appearances.

  • Sophomore pitcher Landen Scott (Independence, Ky. / Simon Kenton) pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts to pick up the win.
  • Graduate pitcher Kyle Fieger (Ft. Mitchell, Ky. / Beechwood) earned the save by pitching the final 1 2/3 innings allowing no runs on two hits and would strike out one.

  • The Saints would collect 12 hits on the day compared to Cumberland's eight.
  • Thomas More earned their first conference win of the season.

Baseball will return to the diamond on Friday, March 4, when they travel to Columbia, Kentucky to take on Lindsey Wilson in a MSC showdown, first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
