Box Score Crestview Hills, Ky. - The baseball program fell to Cumberland University by a score 6-3 in the nine inning conference opener. With the loss the Saints drop to 6-5 on the year and 0-1 in Mid-South play.
- Cumberland would be the first on the board as they scored their first run via a single.
- Junior catcher Jacob Caruso (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) would single home Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) in the bottom of the third to tie the ball game up at one all.
- The Phoenix would retake the lead in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun to make the score 2-1.
- First-year Gavin Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) would score on a passed ball to tie the game back up at 2 in the bottom of the sixth.
- Junior Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio / LaSalle) would then single home Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio / Franklin) to give the Saints their first lead of the day.
- Cumberland would explode for a four run ninth inning to bring the final tally to 6-3.
- Vogelgesang tallied two hits in three plate appearances with a run scored.
- Weingartner would also add two hits for the Saints in three plate appearances to collect and rbi and also added a walk.
- Caruso went 1-4 on the day with a run batted in.
- Martin and Daniels also went one-for-four with a run scored each.
- Sophomore Mychal Grogan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) threw seven complete innings allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four.
- Senior Mitch Mierke (Milford, Ohio/Milford) pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing four runs on four hits.
- First-year Austin Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) threw 2/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits.
- Caruso would collect three more runners trying to steal, only allowing one stolen base.
Baseball will return to the diamond tomorrow, February 26 when they host Cumberland in another nine inning contest, first pitch will approximately take place at 4:30 ET at the Florence Y'alls Stadium.
