Box Score 2 (BAROURVILLE, Ky.) – Thomas More University senior first baseman Andrea Gahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) set the new Thomas More career home run record today (Saturday, February 6, 2021), and the Saints split a season opening doubleheader with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. Union won game one, 8-2, and the Saints won the nightcap, 11-6.
GAME 1
- The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior center fielder Baylee Hobeika (Colerain, Ohio/Colerain) scored on a run batted-in single by junior designated player Elana Harrison (Mason, Ohio/Mason).
- Union plated a run in the bottom of the first and second to take a 2-1 lead.
- Gahan then hit her school record 41st career home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Bulldogs would then score three in the fifth and three in the sixth to post the 8-2 victory.
- Gahan was two-for-four with a home run, a run scored and a RBI.
- Harrison was one-for-three with a RBI.
- Sophomore pitcher Annika Gels (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) suffered the loss as she pitched five innings giving up five runs (all earned) on nine hits and struck out five.
- Sophomore pitcher Emily Wisman (Okeana, Ohio/Harrison) pitched one inning of relief and gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and struck out one.
GAME 2
- The Bulldogs scored two in the first and one in the second to lead 3-0 after two innings.
- Thomas More cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third when Gahan hit a two-run home run to left field scoring sophomore second baseman Caitlin Dawson (Georgetown, Ky./Scott County).
- Union extended the lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the third.
- In the top of the fifth, Hobeika and Gahan scored on a double by Harrison sophomore pitcher Hannah Bishop (Union, Ky./Ryle) hit a double to score Hobeika, while junior pinch runner Lindsey Meier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and sophomore Hailey McAdoo (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) each scored on two different wild pitches to give the Saints a 7-4 lead.
- Union scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.
- In the top of the seventh, junior pinch runner Taylor Peterson (Wilder, Ky./Campbell County) scored on an error, McAdoo and sophomore left fielder Mattison Fisher (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) scored on a triple by first-year pinch hitter Delaney Kemper (Williamstown, Ky./Williamstown) and Kemper scored on a single by sophomore catcher Becca Mowen (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) to extend the lead to 11-6.
- Gahan was two-for-five with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
- Bishop was two-for-three with a double and a RBI.
- Mowen was two-for-three with a RBI.
- Senior left fielder Valerie Hudepohl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two for-five.
- Dawson was one-for-three with two runs scored.
- Harrison was one-for-two with a double and two RBI.
- Bishop earned the win as she pitched five innings giving up four runs (four earned) on 10 hits.
- Sophomore pitcher Olivia Jackson (Florence, Ky./Boone County) earned the save as she pitched two innings giving up one run (earned) on two hits and striking out one.
- The Saints will return to the diamond on February 20 and 21 when they compete at the Bear Creek Tournament in Oneida, Tennessee.
- Thomas More is scheduled to play Asbury University and Brescia University on February 20 and on February 21 it will play Grace College and the University of Rio Grande.
