Box Score (NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The second-seeded Thomas More College softball team fell, 4-3, to third-seeded Saint Vincent College today (Saturday, May 7, 2016) in an elimination game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament at Titan Field in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 31-10 and will wait until Monday (May 9) to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. With the win, the Bearcats improved to 26-13 and advance to play fourth-seeded Bethany College in the championship series of the tournament.
Saint Vincent took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth. Thomas More cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore second baseman Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a run batted-in single scoring freshman third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands) and sophomore left fielder/pitcher Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) had a two-run double scoring junior pinch runner Kayla Fulcher (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) and Sagers. The Saints were unable to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh and Saint Vincent won the game, 4-3.
Freshman second baseman Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) led the team at the plate as she was three-for-four with a double. Sagers was two-for-three with a run scored and a RBI, Knotts was one-for-three with two RBI and senior first baseman Staci Stewart (Erlanger, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) was one-for-two.
Senior pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched five innings giving up four runs (all earned) on 10 hits. Knotts pitched two shutout innings of relief and didn't allow a hit, while striking out one.
