Box Score 2 (LATROBE, Pa.) – The Thomas More College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Saint Vincent College today (Saturday, April 25, 2015) at the Saint Vincent Softball Field in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Saints won game one, 9-0, in five innings and the Bearcats won the nightcap, 4-3.
With the split, the Saints finish the regular season at 23-15 overall and 13-5 in the PAC. Thomas More must wait until Monday to see if it is either the No. 1 or 2 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament as Bethany College and Grove City College must complete a suspended game. If Grove City wins, the Saint will be the No. 1 seed and host the tournament and if Bethany wins, it would be the No. 1 seed and host the tournament. Saint Vincent completes the regular season at 23-9 overall and 11-7 in the PAC and must wait to see if it qualifies for the four-team PAC tournament.
In game one, the Saints scored four in the first, one in the second and four in the fifth, while junior pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) pitched a complete-game five inning shutout, while giving up three hits and striking out four for the 9-0 victory.
Sophomore first baseman Jamie Ertel (Mt. Healthy, Ohio/McAuley) led the team at the plate as she was three-for-three with a double, a run batted-in and a run scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman left fielder Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored, freshman designated player Bree Appel (Amelia, Ohio/Batavia) was two-for-three with a RBI and two runs scored and senior center fielder Catie Luck (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Saint Vincent scored one in the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth and held Thomas More to two runs in the third and one in the fifth for the 4-3 win.
Salzer led the team offensively as she was four-for-four with three RBI, while freshman right fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) was three-for-four with two runs scored.
Salzer suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched six innings giving up four runs (all earned) on nine hits and struck out two.
