Strong second quarter propels Saints over Northwood

(MIDLAND, MICH.) – The Thomas More University women's lacrosse team defeated Northwood University on Thursday evening (April 9) by a score of 24-15. After the two teams were tied at 7 after the first 15 minutes, the Saints outscored the Timberwolves 8-2 in the second quarter which helped propel them to the conference victory. The Saints move to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
 
How they scored
  • Sophomore Elina Emmons (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) scored the first goal for the Saints at the 13:31 mark. Senior Meg Pierani (Lawrenceburg, IN / Mercy McAuley) connected with Anna Wells for the second goal less than 30 seconds later Thomas More took a 2-1 lead less than 2 minutes into the game.
  • Elina Emmons scored again at 12:13 before Northwood scored four unanswered to retake the lead.
  • Thomas More responded with four of their own scored by junior Alex Nunn (Loveland, OH / Loveland), junior Anna Wells (West Chester, OH / Lakota West), freshman Lali Ramirez (Chula Vista, CA / Castle Park), and Meg Pierani. Elina Emmons had the assist on Lali Ramirez's goal.
  • The Timberwolves tied the game at 7 as the first quarter ended.
  • Anna Wells scored another goal with an assist from Elina Emmons at the 12:16 mark of the second quarter to start the 8-2 period for the Saints. Anna Wells scored at 8:35 before scoring on a man-up opportunity at 7:04.
  • Alex Nunn scored with an assist from Anna Wells before junior Morgan Blanchet (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) had her first goal of the season with an assist from Meg Pierani as the Saints took a 12-8 lead.
  • Morgan Blanchet scored her second goal with an assist from Elina Emmons at 4:09 before Elina Emmons and freshman Payton Davis (Springboro, OH / Springboro) each scored with both having an assist from Anna Wells as Thomas More took a 15-9 lead at halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Meg Pierani and Payton Davis scored unassisted to expand the Saints lead.
  • Alex Nunn got an assist for Elina Emmons goal at the 10:23 mark of the third quarter before Anna Wells scored her sixth goal of the game.
  • Anna Wells earned the assist on Payton Davis's goal at the 5:52 mark before Northwood scored with under two minutes remaining in the period.
  • The Saints scored three unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter from Lali Ramirez, Meg Pierani, and Payton Davis on a man-up scenario. Elina Emmons had two assists and Meg Pierani had one on Payton Davis's goal.
  • Northwood scored three goals in the final four minutes before Meg Pierani ended the game with a goal with 24 seconds remaining giving Thomas More the 24-15 win.
 
Notables
  • Anna Wells had 10 points with her six goals and four assists. She had a team-high 8 shots and team-high 8 ground balls while recording a team-high three caused turnovers.
  • Three Saints scored four goals each. Elina Emmons had four goals off six shots and five assists for a total of nine points. Meg Pierani had four goals and three assists as she took five shots while Payton Davis had four goals on five shots.
  • Alex Nunn had two goals and an assist. She recorded four ground balls and broke the program record for single game draw controls with 18 after breaking the record in the season opener against Capital with 16.
  • Morgan Blanchet scored her first two goals of the season and Lali Ramirez had two goals on four shots.

The Saints will have their final road game of the regular season as they travel to face the University of Findlay Oilers on Saturday (April 11). The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
