Saints Swept by Hillsdale to Finish First G-MAC Series

(FLORENCE, KY) -  The Thomas More University baseball team fell to the Hillsdale College Chargers on Sunday afternoon (March 15) in both games of the doubleheader to finish the first conference series of the season.
 
How they scored
Game 1: Hillsdale 7 – Thomas More 4
  • Junior Matt Resing (Independence, KY / St. Henry) hit a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning to score senior Gunner Kalkhoff (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle), junior Nolan Krekeler (Loveland, OH / Moeller), and freshman Jack Geers (Harrison, OH / Harrison).
  • The Saints added to their lead in the bottom of the third as Gunner Kalkhoff hit a solo home run to left field.
  • Hillsdale scored two runs in the top of the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and two more in the top of the sixth to take the lead and the win.
Game 2: Hillsdale 20 – Thomas More 10
  • Hillsdale scored three runs in the first inning.
  • Freshman Sean O'Donnell's (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny / USC Lancaster) double to center field drove in sophomore Chad Atchley (Peach Grove, KY / Simon Kenton) from first who had originally reached on a single to left field to cut into the Hillsdale lead in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Jack Geers led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to left field.
  • The Chargers added a run in the top of the third before having a 13 run fourth inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints scored five runs on two hits. Gunner Kalkhoff led off with a double before scoring as Chad Atchley reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Ayden Holden (Williamsburg, OH / Williamsburg) drew a walk before moving around to score as Sean O'Donnell walked with the bases loaded. Chad Atchley scored on the next batter as pinch hitter redshirt sophomore Drew Edrich (Cleves, OH / Elder) drew a walk. Junior Noah McCarty (Louisville, KY / Christian Academy of Louisville) scored on a wild pitch before Sean O'Donnell scored on a Jack Geers sacrifice fly to left field. This had the Saints trailing 17-7 after six innings.
  • Ayden Holden scored on a Noah McCarty double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chad Atchley scored on a wild pitch before Noah McCarty scored on a groundout as the Chargers got the play at first.
  • Hillsdale capped off the scoring with a three-run home run.
 

Game 1:
  • Gunner Kalkhoff went 1-3 with a solo home run, he scored two runs, and drew a walk.
  • Matt Resing had three RBIs as he went 1-3 with a double.
  • Nolan Krekeler went 1-3 with a double and scored.
  • Jack Greers scored a run and drew a walk.
Game 2:  

Game 1:
  • Senior Jack Perdue (Louisville, KY / Christian Academy) got the start with 3.0 innings of work.
  • Sophomore Logan Cones (Independence, KY / Simon Kenton) came in as relief and struck out 4 of the 18 batters he faced while allowing 1 walk and 4 hits.
Game 2:
  • Senior Garrett Taulbee (Felicity, OH / Felicity Franklin / Marietta) had the start with three innings of work.
  • Senior Tony Spangler (Springboro, OH / Springboro), freshman Finn O'Keefe (Loveland, OH / Moeller), freshman Adam Forton (Fort Thomas, KY / Highlands), Matt Resing, and freshman Chase Maggard (Hamilton, OH / Badin) each had an inning of work, facing a combined 26 batters. They allowed a combined three walks.
 
Up Next
The Saints will travel to Midland, Michigan next weekend to take on Northwood University in a four-game series over Saturday and Sunday (March 21-22).
