Nunn Breaks Program Records as Saints Come from Behind to Win Season Opener

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY) – The Thomas More University women's lacrosse team came from behind to defeat Capital University in their season and home opener on Wednesday (Feb. 18) afternoon. The Saints start the 2026 season 1-0 on the year.
 
How they scored
  • Freshman Payton Davis (Springboro, OH / Springboro) scored her first collegiate goal within the first thirty seconds of the game with an assist from sophomore Elina Emmons (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield).
  • Capital tied the score at the 13:31 mark in the first quarter.
  • Elina Emmons then got a goal of the stick of Julia Diller
  • The Comets scored three goals before senior Meg Pierani (Lawrenceburg, IN / Mercy McAuley) scored with 1:49 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Capital scored once more before the quarter ended to take a 5-4 lead.
  • The Saints scored two goals to open the second quarter, both off the stick of Elina Emmons. Sophomore Hannah Scheland (Cincinnati, OH / Seton) had the first assist and sophomore  Lauren Ferrier (Cincinnati, OH / Mercy McAuley) had the second.
  • While the Comets tied the score, Thomas More quickly answered with two more goals. One from junior Anna Wells (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) with an assist from sophomore Brynn Halbeisen (Cincinnati, OH / Walnut Hills) and one from Meg Pierani.
  • Elina Emmons scored on a man-down situation with 2:36 remaining in the first half to make the score 9-7. Both teams would remain scoreless for the first half and the Saints would take a 2-goal advantage into the halftime break.
  • The third quarter belonged to the Capital offense as they outscored the home team 7-2, as the Comets headed into the final quarter with a 14-11 lead.
  • The first of the goals for the Saints in the third quarter came off Lauren Ferrier with an assist from Meg Pierani at the 12:14 mark. This pushed Thomas More to a 10-8 lead.
  • The second goal was scored at 6:56 to tie the game at 11 with junior Alex Nunn (Loveland, OH / Loveland) getting the goal and Anna Wells on the assist.
  • Anna Wells scored an unassisted goal thirty seconds into the final quarter.
  • Capital scored their final three goals in a row to take a 17-12 lead with 9:21 to play.
  • The Saints comeback started with an Anna Wells goal on a man-up situation at the 7:16 mark. Brynn Halbeisen was credited with the assist. Thomas More kept the Comets scoreless for the remainder of the game.
  • Anna Wells passed the ball to Lauren Ferrier, who scored her second goal of the night.
  • On another man-up opportunity with 4:16 remaining, Anna Wells found the net with an assist from Alex Nunn.
  • Elina Emmons scored another goal less than twenty seconds later to close the gap to 1. Alex Nunn earned her second assist within a minute.
  • With less than a minute to go, Anna Wells tied the game at 17.
  • The final shot came off the stick of Meg Pierani with twenty seven seconds remaining to complete the comeback and the win for the Saints in the first game of the season by a score of 18-17.
 
  • Alex Nunn had two goals, two assists, and was credited for 3 caused turnovers. She also had 16 draw controls for a new single-game program records, breaking her own record of 15 set last year against Ursuline. She also surpassed Kendra Yurt (204) for most draw controls in a career with a new total of 211.
  • Elina Emmons and Anna Wells each had 5 goals. Anna Wells had two assists while Elina Emmons added one on the day.
  • Meg Pierani had three goals and one assist.
  • Lauren Ferrier also had two goals and added one assist.
  • Payton Davis' only goal came on the first possession.
  • Brynn Halbesisen had two assists. Freshman Julia Diller (Whitehouse, OH / Anthony Wayne) and Hannah Scheland each had one assist.
  • As a team the Saints had 43 shots, tied for third best in program history for a single game.
 
 The Saints will hit the road for a three-game stretch with their first stop being at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday (Feb 21). The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM
