No. 1 Women's Basketball Get Back on Track With Win Over Shawnee

Portsmouth, Ohio - The women's basketball program at Thomas More defeated the Bears of Shawnee State University on Monday, February 7 by a score of 86-52. With the win the Saints improve to 22-2 on the year and 15-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

  • Junior guard Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) would knock down a three to kick off the scoring to make the score 3-0 at the 9:44 mark.
  • Graduate student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) would give Thomas More their first double-digit lead of the night with a layup off a feed from senior guard Taylor Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County), making the score 16-5 with just over five to go in the first quarter.
  • Junior Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) gave the Saints their 32nd point of the first quarter by driving past her defender to bring the first quarter score to 32-16.
  • Sophomore guard Maggie Jones (Piner, Ky./Simon Kenton) would get her big day started with a pair of free throws to extend Thomas More's lead to 36-20 with 8:46 to go in the second quarter.
  • Junior forward Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) would extend the Saints lead to 27 with a layup with 4:40 remaining in the half to make the score 47-20.
  • Secrist closed out the second quarter the same way she did the first with a layup to give Thomas More a 57-27 lead heading into the half.

  • Junior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) started out the third period with a bang, splashing in a three-pointer to give the Saints a 60-27 lead.
  • Chrisman would extend Thomas More's lead to 40 at 69-29 via an assist from Clos with 5:54 to go in the third.
  • Jones would close out the third quarter with a three ball to make the score 78-35 after three.
  • Jones would start the scoring in the fourth with a three that was set up by sophomore guard Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) to make the score 81-42 with 8:29 to go in regulation.
  • Smith would feed Schwarber for a layup to make the score 83-44 with 5:44 remaining.
  • Jones would cap off the scoring on the night for Thomas More with another three-pointer to bring the final to 86-52.

  • Jones and Chrisman led the team in scoring with 14 each.
  • Chrisman led the team in rebounds with eight.
  • Junior guard Zoie Barth (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) had a team high five assists.
  • Thomas More outrebounded Shawnee 37-19.
  • Assisted on 18 of 32 made baskets.

Women's basketball will return to the court on Thursday, February 10 when they play host to Freed Hardeman in the Connor Convocation Center at 6 p.m. ET.
