#2 Women's Basketball Defeat #5 Campbellsville for Back to Back MSC Regular Season Title

(CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.)- #2 Thomas More University women's basketball team defeated #5 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon 68-65 to clinch their second Mid-South Conference Regular Season Champions title. The Saints overall record improves to 26-3 overall and 19-2 in conference.

  • Senior Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) kicked off the scoring for the Saints with a layup to make it a 2-5 game with 8:50 on the clock.
  • With 2:59 to play in the first quarter, junior Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) made a jump shot to put the Saints up 15-11.
  • Sophomore transfer Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) would make the Saints final basket of the quarter with a 3-point jump shot, to give the team a 21-16 lead going into the second quarter.
  • Senior Taylor Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a jump shot to start the scoring off for the Saints in the second quarter with 7:08 on the clock (23-22).
  • Graduate Student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) drove to the basket for a layup with 3:08 left in first half to extend the Saints lead to 33-29.
  • Chrisman would lead the Saints with six points and eight rebounds in the first half and tallied one assist.
  • Clos, junior Zoie Barth (St. Thomas/Highlands), and junior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) would all recorded two assists each to lead the Saints.
  • The saints were 44.8% (13-29) from the field, 26.7% (4-15) from the 3-point line, and 75% (3-4) from the free throw line in the first half. 

  • Junior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) would drain a 3-point shot to start the scoring off for the Saints in the second half with 9:18 on the clock (36-30).
  • Smith would make a jump shot with 5:00 on the clock to extend the Saints lead to 47-36.
  • Clos would hit a 3-point jump shot for the Saints final basket of the quarter to give the Saints a 51-47 lead going into the final quarter.
  • Secrist would hit a jumper for the team's first basket of the fourth quarter with 8:06 to play (53-47).
  • With 1:35 on the clock, Hurst would made a 3-point shot to put the Saints up 66-61.
  • Clos would secure the Saints win over the Tigers with two free throws with nine seconds left (68-65).
  • Clos would lead the Saints in the second half with 13 points and had one rebound.
  • Barth and sophomore Maggie Jones (Piner, Ky./Simon Kenton) would tally three assists each to lead the team in the second half.
  • Hurst, Barth, Chrisman, and Simon would all bring down two rebounds each in the second half to lead the Saints defensively.
  • The Saints were 52.2% (12-23) from the field, 60% (6-10) from the 3-point line, and 71.4% (5-7) from the free throw line in the second half.

  • Clos led the Saints with 18 points and had two rebounds and two assists.
  • Hurst followed with 11 points, two rebounds, and one assist.
  • Secrist recorded nine points, two rebounds, and two assists.
  • Chrisman led the team defensively with 10 rebounds and had nine points and two assists.
  • Barth would have five assists to lead the saints and brought down five rebounds.
  • The Saints were 48.1% (25-52) from the field, 40% (10-25) from the 3-point line, and 72.7% (8-11) from the free throw line.

The Saints start postseason play in the MSC Conference Tournament next Thursday (Feb. 24) at 5:30 pm ET in Bowling Green, Ky. with the opponent TBA.
