Columbia, Ky. - The #3 ranked women's basketball program at Thomas More defeated the receiving votes Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson by a score of 72-63 on Saturday evening (December 4). With the win the Saints improve to 8-1 on the year and 4-0 in Mid-South Conference play.
- Graduate student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) and Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) opened up the scoring early for Thomas More garnering a 5-0 with 7:43 remaining in the first quarter.
- Sophomore Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) scored five straight points in a two minute period to gain a 14-6 advantage with 3:30 remaining in the quarter.
- Sophomore Sammi Whiteman (Covington, Ohio/Covington) capped off the scoring in first with a jumpshot to bring the final score of the quarter to 16-6 in favor of the Saints.
- Junior Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) started the scoring in the second on a layup off a feed from junior Zoie Barth (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Highlands) making the score 18-6.
- Barth made a three-pointer to give Thomas More their biggest lead of the game at 21 with a score of 27-6 with 5:17 to go in the half.
- Schwarber closed out the first half with a layup to bring the score to 35-16 heading into the locker rooms.
- Junior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) opened up the second half with a three to give the Saints their largest lead of the night at 22.
- Sophomore Rachel Martin would help put a halt to the Lindsey Wilson run with two free throws to give Thomas More a 45-36 lead at the 3:24 mark in the third.
- Hurst would help close out the third with the way she started a three-pointer to make the score 53-43 after three quarters of play.
- Martin made a basket with 8:35 remaining in the fourth to give the Saints an eight point lead.
- Chrisman would help put the game away with a layup after she previously completed an and-one to give Thomas More a 68-55 lead with 2:40 to go.
- Barth would close out the scoring for the Saints with three straight free throws to bring a final score of 72-63.
- Hurst led the team in scoring with 13, Barth finished with 12.
- Simon and Schwarber led the team in rebounding with seven each.
- The team assisted on 18 of their 27 baskets.
- Shot 45% from the field as a team.
The women's basketball team returns to the court next Saturday, December 11, when they travel to Pikeville, Kentucky to take on the University of Pikeville Bears at 2 p.m. ET.
