#3 Women's Basketball Slide Pass Pikeville in Overtime

(PIKEVILLE, Ky.)-#3 Thomas More University women's basketball team defeated Pikeville on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 11), 76-72 in overtime. The Saints overall record improves to 9-1 and 5-0 in the conference. 

  • Junior Courtney Hurst (Burlington,Ky./Conner) started the scoring off for the Saints draining a 3-point jump shot to put the Saints on the board with 7:53 to go in the first quarter (3-2).
  • Sophomore transfer Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Mercy McAuley) made a 3-point jump shot with 2:21 to go in the first quarter to extend the Saints lead to five (16-11).
  • Graduate Student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) made a layup to close out the scoring for the Saints in the first quarter (18-17) with 21 second left in the quarter.
  • Junior Summer Secrist (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) drove to the basket for a layup to kick the scoring off for the Saints in the second quarter (20-17) with 9:44 on the clock.
  • With 6:47 to play, sophomore Maggie Jones (Piner, Ky./Simon Kenton) drove to the rim for a layup to extend the Saints lead to nine (30-21).
  • Junior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) made a layup with 2:02 to play in the half to make to close out the scoring for the Saints in the first half.
  • Smith led the Saints with 10 points and had one rebound.
  • Chrisman and senior Taylor Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) both led the Saints with three rebounds and three assists.
  • Sophomore Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) also had three rebounds.
  • The Saints were 66.7% (16-24) from the field, 50% (4-8) from the 3-point line, and 25% (1-4) from the free throw line in the first half.

  • Clos kicked off the scoring for the Saints in the second half with a layup with 7:35 on the clock (39-33).
  • Simon would make a layup with 4:50 to play in the quarter to regain the Saints lead (43-42).
  • With two seconds to play in the quarter, Martin would drive to the basket for a layup for the final basket of the quarter.
  • Hurst would start off the fourth quarter with a jump shot to close the Bears lead to 51-49 with 9:57 to play in the game.
  • With 3:56 to play in the game, Clos drained a three to tie the game up at 59-59.
  • Secrist made two free throws to put tie the game up at 64-64 with four seconds to play.
  • Clos led the Saints with seven points and had one rebound in the second half.
  • Hurst followed with six points and one rebound.
  • Junior Kenzie Schwarber (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) led the Saints defensively in the second half with three rebounds.
  • The Saints were 29.2% (7/24) from the field, 28.6% (2/7) from the 3-point line, and 61.1% (11/18) from the free throw line in the second half. 

  • Simon made a layup for the Saints first points of overtime for the Saints to take the lead (66-64).
  • With 1:15 to play, Simon made two free throws to extend the Saints lead to 74-70.
  • Smith drove to the basket for a layup with seven seconds to play to secure the Saints 76-72 win.

  • Simon led the Saints with 15 points and recorded four rebounds, and two assists.
  • Smith led the team with 15 points and five rebounds and had one assist.
  • Secrist followed with 13 points and two rebounds.
  • Clos tallied four assists to lead the team and had four rebounds and seven points. 
  • The Saints were 49.1% (25-53) from the field, 40% (6-15) from the 3-point line, and 60% (18-30) from the free throw line. 

The Saints return to the court on Tuesday (Dec. 14) to face Cumberlands (Ky.) at 6:00 pm ET in the Connor Convocation Center.
