#2 Women's Basketball Takes First Loss of the Season to RV Mount Vernon Nazarene

(MOUNT VERNON, Ohio)-#2 Thomas More University women's basketball team took their first loss of the season to RV Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday evening (Nov. 12),76-82. The Saints overall record falls to 1-1.

  • Graduate Student Alexah Chrisman (Greendale, Ind./McAuley) made a layup with 9:14 on the clock to put the Saints on the board (2-0).
  • Junior Emily Simon (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) swished a 3-point jump shot to help the Saints regain the lead with 4:12 to play (9-8).
  • At the end of the first quarter, the Saints trailed by four (14-18).
  • Sophomore transfer Alex Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy McAuley) made a layup to start the scoring off for the Saints in the second quarter to put the Saints down by five (16-21) with 9:34 on the clock.
  • Sophomore Rachel Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day)would drive down the court for a layup to put the Saints within three with 1:17 to play before half. 
  • The Saints would trail by five going into the locker room, 31-36.
  • Simon led the Saints with nine points in the first half.
  • Smith would follow with seven points and three rebounds.
  • Chrisman recorded five rebounds and two assists to the lead the team and had four points.
  • Junior Courtney Hurst (Burlington, Ky./Conner) also led the Saints with two assists and has four points and one rebound.
  • The Saints were 25.7% (9-35) from the field, 13.3% (2-15) from the 3-point line, and 68.8% (11-16) from the free throw line in the first half. 

  • Hurst drained a 3-pointer to start things off for the Saints in the third quarter to put the Saints down by two with 9:51 on the clock (34-36).
  • Martin would make a defensive rebound for an assist to sophomore Kelly Brenner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) to give the Saints the go ahead lead with 9:12 to play in the third quarter (38-36).
  • With 44 seconds to play in the third quarter, Simon made the final basket of the third quarter to give the Saints a 56-54 lead going into the fourth quarter.
  • Hurst made a free throw to start things off for the Saints in the fourth quarter to put the Saints down by three (57-60) with 8:43 to play in the game. 
  • Chrisman made a layup with 2:59 to play to put the Saints down by five (68-73).
  • With 24 seconds to play, Brenner makes a jump shot to make it a 73-79 game.
  • Hurst had 11 points in the second half to lead the scoring for the Saints.
  • Smith recorded nine points for the Saints in the second half and had three rebounds and two assists.
  • Chrisman also had nine points and played a big role defensively with seven rebounds.

  • Smith led the Saints with 16 points and had six rebounds and two assists.
  • Hurst followed with 15 points, two rebounds, and one assist.
  • Simon also tallied 15 points and had four rebounds. 
  • Chrisman led the Saints defensively with 12 rebounds and had 13 points and two assists.
  • Martin led the Saints in assists with three and had seven points and three rebounds.
  • The Saints were 35.3% (24-68) from the field, 28.6% (8-28) from the 3-point line, and 62.5% (20-32) from the free throw line. 

Next up, the Saints return to the Connor Convocation Center on Thursday evening (Nov. 18) to open up conference play against Life at 6:00 pm ET.
