Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, March 7, 2020) to Georgetown College at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 5-3, but the Tigers won the nightcap, 10-6.
GAME ONE
- Thomas More took a 5-0 lead in the first inning sophomore second baseman Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) scored on a run batted-in single by junior center fielder Tyler Flick (Okeana, Ohio/Ross), sophomore designated hitter Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond (Ohio)) had a sacrifice fly scoring first-year third baseman Mike Newsom (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Flick scored on a single by junior left fielder Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) and junior shortstop Chase Keller (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) had a single scoring Reynolds and first-year pinch runner Noah Weingartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle).
- Georgetown plated a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More posted the 5-3 win.
- Senior pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) earned the win as he pitched six and on-third innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits and struck out two.
- Senior pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned the save as he pitched two-thirds of an inning and didn't allow a hit or run.
- Keller was one-for-two with a two RBI.
- Reynolds was one-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.
- Flick was one-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.
GAME TWO
- Georgetown scored one the first, one in the second and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
- Thomas More cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third when sophomore right fielder Aiden Reverman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had a RBI double scoring Keller.
- The Tigers then scored on the fourth, one the fifth and five in the seventh to extended the lead to 10-1.
- The Saints answered with five in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 10-6 when Reynolds scored on a single by Newsom, Reverman scored on a bases loaded walk and senior designated hitter Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had a three-run double bring Martin, Newsom and first-year first baseman Dylan Doverspike (Verona, Ky./Beechwood).
- Wellbrock led the team at the plate as he was one-for-five with a double and three RBI.
- Reverman was one-for-three with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
- Keller was one-for-four with a double and a run scored.
- Senior pitcher Mitchell Morris (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) suffered the loss as he pitched four innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits and striking out two.
- Sophomore pitcher Luke Dougherty (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) pitched two and two-third innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits, while striking out four.
- The Saints and the Tigers will close-out the three-game series tomorrow with a single-nine inning game.
- First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.at Thomas More Field.
