Saints Tie Kentucky State 10-10

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball tied Kentucky State University on Wednesday evening (March 4, 2020) at Thomas More Field as the score was 10-10 at the end of the ninth inning when the game was called due to darkness.

• Thomas More scored first in the bottom of the opening inning when senior Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) hit a two-run double to right-center that scored sophomore Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and first-year Dylan Doverspike (Verona, Ky./Beechwood).
• Kentucky State scored twice in the top of the second and three times in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead.
• The Saints scored two in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Wellbrock that drove in junior Tyler Flick (Okeana, Ohio/Ross) and Doverspike scored on a ground out by sophomore Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) to make it a 5-4 game.
• Thomas More took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth when first-year Mike Newsom (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) tripled home junior Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Flick.
• The Saints scored two more in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 8-5 as first-year Cooper Daniels (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) scored on an error and sophomore Aiden Reverman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) came home on a single by Martin.
• After Kentucky State scored two in the top of the sixth, Thomas More added another in the bottom of the inning when Flick stole home on a double-steal to take a 9-7 lead.
• The Thorobreds then took a 10-9 lead with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth.
• The Saints tied the game at 10-10 in the eighth inning when first-year Noah Winegartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) scored on a single by Wellbrock.

• Wellbrock was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, and four RBIs.
• Martin was 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI, and a run.
• Flick was 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, an RBI, and two runs.
• Doverspike was 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored.
• Newsom was 2-for-6 with an RBI triple and a run scored.
• Reynolds reached base three times on a single and two walks with a run scored.

• First-year pitcher Hunter Nantz (London, Ky./North Laurel) started for the Saints and pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four.

• Thomas More moves to 3-10-1 while Kentucky State is 11-3-1.
• The game was the second consecutive draw at Thomas More Field as the Saints tied Otterbein 6-6 in 10 innings in the 2019 home finale.

• Thomas More will open Mid-South Conference play when it hosts Georgetown College for a three-game series starting on Friday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
