King's Last Second Heroics Helps Give Saints PAC Road Win

Box Score

By: Tyler Smith '18

(GREENVILLE, Pa.) – Sophomore guard Damion King (Winchester, Ky. George Rodger Clark) hit a buzzer beater to help Thomas More College win an overtime game versus Thiel College by the score of 79-77. Thomas More moves to 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and 4-2 on the season.

Austin Young (Campbellsburg, Ky./ Henry County) led the Saints in scoring with 17 points. The Saints had 10 players reach the scoring column, the biggest of which was scored by King. With 11 seconds left King brought the ball up the court after coming off a screen and shot a three-pointer in front of the Thomas More bench resulting in his only three points of the game and the game-winning basket.

Talking with Kings about the game he said, "This is the type of game that you prepare for, when things are back and forth and you have to grind out a win and stay together with your teammates through the good and bad and it's a great feeling to come out with the win."  Of course we had to ask about the game-winning shot and all he had to say was, "I knew that there wasn't much time left so I just tried to come down the court and make a play. Those are the type of shots that you dream about when you're a kid and maybe one day your dreams will come true and it did for me".

Other notable scorers for the Saints were sophomore center Junior Stockwell (Florence, Ky./Boone County), who had 14 points, sophomore guard Ryne Callahan (Morehead, Ky./ Rowan County), who finished with 12 and junior center Simon Clifford (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), who had 11 points in the game with 8 coming in overtime.

Thiel (5-1, 1-1 PAC) had seven Tomcats reach the scoring column. The Tomcats had four players in double digit points, led by Tyreik Burton, who finished the game with a game-high 31 points. Along with Burton, guard Nyric Gosley had 13, Josh Lumbus had 11 and Mert Ozkaynak finished with 10.

Talking with Coach Drew Cooper on the exciting game he said, "That was the definition of a team win, which is what every conference game demands. What was great was it was different guys at different times in the game making the plays".

The Saints will continue conference play on December 10th as they take on Bethany College inside the Connor Convocation Center. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m.
