Box Score (GREENCASTLE, Ind.) – The fourth-seeded Thomas More College softball team defeated top-seeded and fifth-ranked Trine University, 3-2, today (Friday, April 8, 2015) on the first day of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Greencastle, Indiana Regional played at DePauw University.
With the win, the Saints improve to 27-15 and will play either second-seeded DePauw at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the winners' bracket final. With the loss, the Thunder fall to 37-4 and will play third-seeded Washington University – St. Louis in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
Trine took a 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. In the top of the seventh inning the Saints tied the game at 2-2 when junior first baseman Staci Stewart (Erlanger, Ky./Lloyd Memorial) hit a two-run home run scoring freshman left fielder/designated player Sammy Sagers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). Then freshman second baseman Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) hit the eventual game-winning run batted-in single scoring freshman right fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) for the final score of 3-2.
Junior pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) earned the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings giving up two runs (both earned) on five hits and struck out four.
At the plate, Knotts, Stewart and Sager each had one hit for the Saints.
