McGovney Scores Career-High 33 Points to Lead Saints Past W&J, 95-69

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – Sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 95-69 win over Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, January 10, 2015) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Presidents fall to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in the PAC.

The Presidents' jumped out to an early 4-0 lead when Eric Holmes made two free-throws with 18:34 to play in the first half.  Thomas More answered with a 12-2 run to take a 12-6 lead on a McGovney jumper with 15:59 to play in the opening half.  W&J responded with an 11-6 run capped by two free-throws by Brian Lindquist with 11:51 to play in the first half.  The Saints used a 26-12 run to extend their lead to 44-29 with 1:40 to play in the half when senior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) made a jumper.  W&J scored the final three points in the half to cut the Saints' halftime lead to 44-32.

In the second half, Thomas More extended its lead to as many as 31 points as it out-scored W&J 51-37 in the half to cruise to the 95-69 victory.  

Thomas More out-scored the Presidents 38-30 in the paint, 20-5 off turnovers and 21-4 in second chance points.

Three Saints joined McGovney in double-figure scoring as senior forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) finished with 19 points, while sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) and freshman forward Austin Young (Campbellsburg, Ky./Henry County) each added 10 points.  Clark led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds, while Mumford and Mays led the team in assists with six and five respectively.

Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (January 14) when it hosts Geneva College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
