Box Score (CHICAGO, Ill.) - The third-seeded Thomas More College softball team fell, 2-1, to fourth-seeded Benedictine University today (Saturday, May 10, 2014) in the winner's bracket final of the NCAA Division III Championship's Chicago Regional at Stagg Field in Chicago, Illinois.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 31-11 and will play either the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater or University of Chicago in an elimination game today at 4 p.m. Central/5 p.m. Eastern. With the win, Benedictine improves to 34-11 and advances to tomorrow's championship game.
Benedictine plated a run in the fifth and sixth to take a 2-0 lead and Thomas More scored one in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as Benedictine won the game, 2-1.
Junior left fielder Catie Luck (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami), senior center fielder Ashley Shouse (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro), sophomore right fielder Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) and freshman Jamie Ertel (Mt. Healthy, Ohio/McAuley) each had a hit in the game for the Saints. Luck scored the Saints' run in the sixth inning.
Senior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched seven innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits, while striking out four and walking two.
