Box Score 2 (CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College softball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Saint Vincent College today (Saturday, April 26, 2014) to clinch the PAC regular season and No. 1 seed in next week's PAC Tournament. The Saints won game one, 9-1, in five innings and the nightcap, 4-1, at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 29-8 and 16-2 in the PAC. Thomas More will host the PAC tournament on Thursday and Friday (May 1 and 2) at Thomas More Field. The PAC office will announce the game times and pairings later tonight or Sunday morning. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 22-14 overall and 8-10 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, the Saints scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the third and three in the fifth, while holding the Bearcats to a run in the fifth for the 9-1 five-inning win.
Senior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) earned the win in the circle as she pitched five innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits, while striking out 10 and walking three.
Thomas More was led at the plate by sophomore shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon), who was three-for-four with two doubles, four runs batted-in and a run scored and freshman pinch hitter/first baseman Jamie Ertel (Mt. Healthy, Ohio/McAuley), who was two-for-two with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Saints plated four runs in the fifth and held Saint Vincent scoreless over the final three innings for the 4-1 victory.
At the plate, Walter was two-for-four with a run scored and sophomore designated player Hayley Shuemake (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) was two-for-four with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) earned the win as she pitched seven innings and gave up one run (earned) on four hits, while striking out five and walking two.
