Thomas More Sweeps Westminster at Home

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College softball teams swept Westminster College today (Wednesday, April 23, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints rallied to win game one, 7-5, and won the nightcap, 5-0.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 27-8 overall and 14-2 in the PAC and the Titans fall to 20-14 overall and 9-7 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, Westminster scored one run in the first, three in the third and one in the fifth and held Thomas More to a run in the first, two in the second and one in the fifth to lead 5-4 after five innings.  The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held Westminster scoreless in the seventh for the 7-5 victory.

Sophomore right fielder/pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) led the team at the plate as she was three-for-four with a run batted-in.  Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as sophomore shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) was two-for-four with a double, a RBI and two runs scored, senior center fielder Ashley Shouse (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored and junior second baseman Hannah Curtis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was two-for-three with two runs scored.

Senior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) started and had a no decision as she pitched three innings giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.  Salzer earned the win as she pitched four innings of relief and gave up one run (earned) on four hits, while striking out two and walking two.

In the nightcap, the Saints scored two in the third and added three runs in the seventh, while Salzer and Burns combined for a shutout and the Saints won, 5-0.

Salzer earned the win in the circle as she pitched four scoreless innings and gave up four hits, while striking out three and walking four.  Burns earned her second save of the season as she pitched three innings and gave up two hits, while striking out three.

Shouse led the team at the plate as she was two-for-four with a run scored.  Salzer was one-for-four with a home run, three RBI and a run scored and sophomore designated player Hayley Shumake (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) was one-for-three with two RBI.

The Saints close out the regular season on Saturday (April 26) when they host Saint Vincent College in a 12 p.m. PAC doubleheader at Thomas More Field. Thomas More will honor its senior softball student-athletes prior to the first pitch in game one.
