Box Score 2 (WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) - The Thomas More College softball split two games today (Monday, March 10, 2014) during the first day of the Rebel Springs Games at the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, Florida. The Saints fell, 2-1, to Washington College in the first game of the day and defeated Suffolk University, 5-3, in the second game.
With the split, the Saints are 1-1 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored one in the top of the fifth and Washington plated two in the bottom of the fifth for the 2-1 victory. Senior third baseman Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) led the team at the plate as she was two-for-three. Senior center fielder Ashley Fletcher (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) was one-for-three with a run batted-in, while sophomore shortstop Anna Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) and sophomore catcher Haley Shuemake (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) each had a hit.
Senior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched five innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits and struck out five, while walking two.
Shuemaker led the Saints' offense in the win over Suffolk as she had a three-run homerun and added a sacrifice fly. Freshman outfielder Erica Lang (Florence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four with a RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) earned the win as she pitched seven innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out nine, while walking three.
Thomas More is back in action tomorrow as it plays Marietta College at 11 a.m. and Hiram College at 1 p.m. at the Auburndale Softball Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
