Box Score (NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - The fourth-seeded Thomas More College softball team defeated top-seeded Westminster College, 2-1, today (Thursday, May 2, 2013) in the opening game of the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament at the Westminster Softball Facility in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 22-17 and advance to play the winner of the other first round game between second-seeded Geneva College and third-seeded Washington & Jefferson College in the winners' bracket finals at 3 p.m. today.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when sophomore left fielder Catie Luck (Maineville, Ky./Little Miami) reached on a double and then scored on an error. Thomas More increased the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth when junior third baseman Alex Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) singled and then two batters later scored on an error. Westminster scored a run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Saints won, 2-1.
Junior pitcher Ronni Burns (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) earned the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings and gave up one run (earned) on five hits and struck out three.
The Saints were led at the plate by Walter, who was two-for-four with a run scored and freshman left fielder Mamee Salzer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry), who was two-for-four.
